HEROES HAVE ROOTS BEYOND BORDERS

Through HEROES HAVE ROOTS BEYOND BORDERS, Louis Barthélemy explores the way cultures build their heroic figures while reviving the craft skills that pass them on. The exhibition brings together a series of works devoted to representations of the male body, seen as a territory where memory, identity, desire, power and commitment intersect. Athletes, wrestlers, champions and figures of resistance become the vehicles of narratives that question the many forms of heroism.

From Senegalese wrestlers to Olympic champions, HEROES HAVE ROOTS BEYOND BORDERS gathers figures who escape dominant narratives and propose other forms of heroism. Here, the hero is not only the one who triumphs, but the one whose body embodies a culture, a history or a struggle. A tribute is also paid to the Egyptian LGBT activist Sarah Hegazi, through a work in the colours of the rainbow flag.

Each work is born of a dialogue with craft traditions. The rattan busts are made in collaboration with a cooperative of women artisans in Morocco. The tapestries are produced in Cairo with master artisans of khayameya (a traditional Egyptian textile art of hand-sewn appliqué and patchwork), combining this technique with bazin fabrics from West Africa. The plaster bas-reliefs, made with a Moroccan master artisan, are punctuated with glass inlays that extend their sculptural and luminous dimension.

Louis Barthélemy sees craft not as a mere medium but as a living language. By circulating skills between Morocco, Egypt and West Africa, he composes a gallery of heroic figures where living heritage, contemporary creation and collective narratives meet. Techniques travel, change context and take on new meanings, making craft a language able to carry memories, connect territories and bring forth new forms of heroism.
